What SMEs get

How VCOE works

After reviewing your application, our Access to Finance Deal Flow Committee will invite you to a free assessment call to better understand your solution, ask clarifying questions, and exchange initial insights. Following this call, we will inform you whether your company is a good fit for the next phase:

Who should apply

We are looking for start-ups with high-impact healthcare and life science solutions ready to scale:

  • Privately held companies based in Europe, Horizon Europe-associated countries (e.g. Israel, Canada), or with a strong interest in expanding within the European market.
  • Looking to raise at least €3M in their next round.
  • No ongoing commitment with another fundraising partner.
  • Innovating in biotech, medtech or digital health with transformational innovation.
  • At least six months before launching your fundraising process (to allow time for preparation).
  • Demonstrated traction through clinical, commercial, or technological validation (e.g. pilot results, partnerships, certifications, or early revenues).
  • Previous fundraising experience, whether dilutive (equity) or non-dilutive (grants, subsidies, etc.), is a strong plus.

Financial considerations

After a company successfully passes the initial free assessment, it may be invited to proceed to a deep dive evaluation, conducted by expert reviewers. This next step is based on the outcome of the initial free assessment call.

The deep dive evaluation costs €3,000 and includes a comprehensive analysis of the company’s strengths and weaknesses, an in-depth Q&A session with the Access to Finance team and following this a tailored recommendation report debrief where the Access to finance team provides the startup with a support workplan to fill the identified gaps.

The follow-up support programme is fee-based, with pricing depending on the type and level of support required. While costs are tailored to each company, they generally range from €15,000 to €30,000. All fees are discussed and agreed upon transparently before any service begins.

If the company proceeds to investor promotion and successfully raises funds through our support, a 3% success fee is applied on the amount raised.
This ensures a flexible, high-impact collaboration, fully aligned with your fundraising goals.

VCOE External Collaborators

Strategic Collaboration: EIT Health & European Investment Fund

EIT Health and the European Investment Fund (EIF) joined forces in 2020 to create the Venture Centre of Excellence (VCoE), a first-of-its-kind public-private co-investment platform in Europe dedicated to supporting innovation in healthcare.

This strategic collaboration was designed to accelerate investments in life science start-ups across Europe by mobilising both public and private capital. At its core is the creation of a health-focused Fund of Funds, driven by EIF, which provides capital to selected venture capital funds with a strong track record in health innovation.

The initiative aims to strengthen the European health innovation ecosystem by:

    • Enhancing access to capital for high-potential ventures
    • Encouraging long-term investment in early-stage healthcare technologies
    • Building synergies between institutional investors, corporates, and public actors

By partnering with EIF, EIT Health contributes to reinforcing Europe’s position as a global hub for healthcare innovation and long-term investment in life sciences.
